Five Cougars Named NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award Winners

(Colorado Springs, CO) - Five Coastal Bend College student-athletes were recently named to NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards.  To be honored, the student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 4.0 (First Team honors), 3.80 – 3.99 (Second Team honors) or 3.60-3.79 (Third Team honors) and participated in regular season NJCAA competition.  The Cougar recipients are:

NJCAA All-Academic First Team

Charles Payne – sophomore, right wing from London, England, played in all but one of the Cougars contest this season while earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.  He signed with Missouri Valley College (NAIA – Marshall, MO) to further his academic pursuits in Graphic Design, while suiting up for the Vikings this fall.

NJCAA All-Academic Second Team

Kristina Kana – sophomore, forward from Mont Belvieu, TX averaged 11.6 points per game and led the Cougars in scoring.  She signed with TAMU – Kingsville, to continue her academic and playing careers as a Javelina, while majoring in Education.

Daniel McNicholas – sophomore, goal keeper from London, England, sported a 3.91 GPA while recording 8 shutouts in net for the Cougars this season.  He signed with Urbana University (Urbana, OH) this spring to continue his academic studies in Business while playing for the Blue Knights.

Athen Schultz – sophomore, outfielder hailing from Buda, TX, appeared in 16 games for the Cougars hitting an impressive .367 with a home run.  More impressive was his 3.87 GPA in Construction Management.  Shultz is still considering several opportunities to continue his academic and playing career.

NJCAA All-Academic Third Team

Garrett Boes – freshman, catcher from Austin, TX appeared in 26 games, driving in and scoring eight runs for the Cougar offense while corralling a 3.71 major in Engineering.  Boes has chosen to conclude his playing career while pursuing his education at the University of Texas, Austin this fall.
