Men's Soccer Dominates in Region XIV Opener

It wasn't supposed to be Coastal Bend College's regular season opener or their NJCAA Region XIV opener, but hurricane Harvey made it that way, as the Courgars traveled to northeastern Texas to take on Paris Junior College.

The weather fueled layoff showed early as the Cougars could not score through the first 30 minutes of the match-up.  Matthause Halmer drew first blood as he took a ball near midfield, evaded a couple of Dragon defenders, shot and scored at the 32:30 mark of the game.  That goal made all the tumblers click into place, as the rout was on.

Jordan Clement was next only 30 seconds later, as he deposited Harry Royds pass to make the score 2-0.  The Cougars would double up again in the 43rd and 44th minutes of the game as Matthause Halmer collected his other point of the match.  This time an assist to Ollie Nugent, moments before Jan Grun put away a pass of the foot of Aaron Rymer to put the score at 4-0 at Intermission.

Things went from bad to worse for PJC when in the 73rd minute a mis-played ball led to a Cougar goal and a 5-0 lead.  Coach Brian Byrd began substituting freely using his depth to overwhelm the Dragons and keep the Cougar legs fresh for Saturday's match up with Northeast Texas CC.

The icing on the cake game late when TJ (Thomas) Stead set up Kyle Hayer with a brilliant centering pass; before Jack Sim took a Ross O'Connor pass and made it count in the 87th and 89th minutes of the game respectively.

"I couldn't be more pleased with how we performed today," stated Coach Byrd.  "Most of these boy's have never been through anything like this (Hurricane Harvey).  Then to have our schedule changed, and training schedule altered; to come about perform like this, was impressive." added Byrd.

The Cougars will continue their tour of the northeastern area of Texas on Saturday, when they make the drive over to Mount Pleasant with another NJCAA Region XIV match-up against Northeast Texas Community College at 2:00 pm.
