CBC Completes Women's Basketball Coaching Staff

Coastal Bend College Director of Athletics Paul Cantrell, recently announced the hirings of Nate Purswell and Mia Ochoa as the new Cougar Women's Basketball coaching staff.  

Purswell takes the reigns as the leader of the Cougar Women's Basketball Program after serving as an assistant the past four years at Frank Phillips College in Borger, TX.  While on staff at "Frank", Purswell worked with both the women's (2013-2015) and men's (2016) programs as the lead assistant coach handling recruiting, training, scouting and academic enhancement.  Purswell also served as an adjunct mathematics faculty member at "Frank"; a role he will also serve here at CBC.  

Purswell begin his playing days at Borger High School, before attending Frank Phillips College, where he earned the Academic Plainsmen of the Year Award ('09), NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American ('08) and Phi Theta Kappa memberhsip ('08 and '09).  After graduating with his Associate in Science, Purswell extended his academic and playing career at West Texas A & M University, graduating with his Bachelor degree in 2014.  Purswell recently completed his Master's Degree in Athletic Administration in May of 2017.

 

Ochoa graduated in 2013 from Whitharral High school in Whitharral, Texas where she was a four year starter for the Lady Panthers helping them advance to the girl's state basketball tournament in Austin, Texas in 2011, 2012 and before capturing the state championship in 2013; while being named to the All-State team in all three seasons. After graduating High school, Ochoa attended South Plains College in Levelland, Texas where she was a part of the Lady Texans basketball team.

After her freshman year, Ochoa transferred to Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas and played for the Lady Plainsmen and graduated with her Associates degree in applied Science. Ochoa moved on to attend and play at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. After a solid junior year at Sul Ross, She suffered a career ending ankle early in her senior year.  Ochoa was immediately asked to join the coaching staff as a student assistant for the Lady Lobos basketball team. She is currently finishing up her Bachelor's degree online and is scheduled to graduate in December. After graduation, she plans to continue her education and work towards receiving her Master's degree in Kinesiology.
