Season Preview
After graduating nine sophomores CBC Women's Basketball will see a 95 % brand new team suiting up in the Spring 2021. With only one returner the CBC women's basketball team will be brand new to College Basketball and Region 14.
The lone returning sophomore Brianna Martinez a 5'4 combo guard from Edinburg will see an increase in minutes. She had two double figure point games, with 10 points against Panola at home. Her other double figure game was at home against Trinity Valley with 12 points and she shot 66 percent from the three-point line. She appeared in 28 out of 30 games playing about 13 minutes a game.
The 2020-2021 Coastal Bend Cougars will feature sixteen Freshman and two Junior College transfers. This team will see a lot of competition for minutes and with such a young team the Freshman will have a lot of responsibility.
Asia Wheeler a Freshman Point Guard from Cleveland, TX will bring championship experience from High School level as she went to the state championship game her Junior Year. "Asia brings a court sense and high IQ at the point guard position. She can score close and distribute the ball well."
Cierra Zapata a combo guard from a small school of Prairie Lea will help handle the ball and is a scoring threat. "She brings a sense of pride and determination and unmatched work ethic you cannot teach. She is the exact definition of a student athlete and will be a tremendous asset to our program."
Hailey Graves a combo guard from Waco area adds the ability to score at multiple levels. "Hailey brings us a player who knows spacing, and positioning and has the ability to score on the major two levels for our offense."
Tunisha Strong is a transfer from Angelina who accumulated nearly 3,000 points in high school on championship teams from Hardin Jefferson. "Tunisha brings so many varieties of offense to our team."
Ari Gallardo a combo guard from Los Fresnos brings more scoring depth to our team. "Ari can get to the basket and can shoot the three, which will help us score the ball."
Hailey Riojas a forward from Gonzales adds a stretch forward who can shoot and bring post defenders out. "She adds a lot of vocal leadership and so much to our forward position this season."
Taryanna McNary a forward from Mount Pleasant, TX adds another stretch forward that has some vision and can go low or high from her forward position. "Mo can change us at the forward position, her ability to shoot and go high low in the post is a great addition."
Savanna Smith is a combo guard from Houston can score the basketball. "Hopefully she helps replace our barrage of combo guards from last year's team."
Jade Del Bosque is a combo guard from Beeville. "She has exceptional ability at filling her spot and getting open. She is a knock down shooter."
Miranda Lamb is a forward from San Marcos. "Miranda brings an ability to fill the stat book in multiple ways."
Coastal Bend College schedule always features a top 20 Massey Rating strength of schedule. This year will feature about the same type of schedule.
We will see non-conference foes Temple both home and away. We will see non-conference region 23 opponents LSU-Eunice here on the January 23rd, 2021.
As always the conference schedule will be filled with ranked teams and top ten competition.
Conference schedule will feature the #1 seeded team for last year's NJCAA championships (cancelled due to COVID), Trinity Valley. CBC will host Trinity Valley on February 3rd, 2021 at 5:30 PM and go to Athens, TX to play on Saturday March, 6th, 2021. Trinity Valley has played in the NJCAA championships final four two of the last three years.
The other big conference game is perineal top 5 Tyler Junior College. Coastal Bend hosts Tyler on Saturday April 3rd, 2021 at 2:00 PM and travel to Tyler on February 27th. Tyler has qualified for the NJCAA national championships the last two years.
