Beeville, Tx- The Coastal Bend College Men's basketball team hosted Trinity Valley Community College on Wednesday night, December 9th for a Region XIV Conference game. This would be the third conference contest for the Cougars as they looked to win their first game of league play.
Both the Cougars and Cardinals duked it out in the early stages of the game, but CBC took a one point lead at the 12:44 mark in the first half following a timeout, 11-10. Coastal Bend ended up extending their lead, 30-20 over Trinity Valley with five minute left before intermission.
However, the Cardinals relentless effort put them back in the game as they went on a 16-5 run to take a one point lead at the halftime, 36-35. Having their fair share of defensive lapses as well as offensive woes, the Cougars trailed.
To begin the second half CBC went on a 13-0 run in the opening minutes as Jaylen Williams lead the charge by hitting three, three pointers. The Cougars squandered their lead, as the Cardinals tied up the ballgame, 50-50 around the 12 minute mark.
During the next eight and half minutes of game play, Coastal Bend went on a 23-10 run over TVCC. From there, the Cougars would close out the game with 80-68 win.
CBC improves to 3-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The win over Trinity Valley would mark the first victory since January 12th 2013 when the Cougars beat the Cardinals in Athens, TX, 76-65.
Cougar Guard, Jaylen Williams lead the attack with a game-high, 22 points, shooting 4-5 from beyond the arc. Forward, Robert Chapman was the only other Cougar to hit the double-digit mark with 10 tallies. Chapman also recorded four rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots for his stat line. Big man, Ugochuckwu Ejiofor notched in eight points and snagged a game-high 14 rebounds for his contriubution to the team's victory. Guard, Lonzo Rand netted nine points while recording three rebounds and three assists to his stat line. Faybeyon Shelton scored nine points for the game, shooting 4-5 from the field with four rebounds.
Coastal Bend's next game will be in Paris, TX on Saturday, December 11th as they face the Paris Junior College Dragons. Tip-Off is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Hunt Gymnasium.
