Beeville, TX- The Coastal Bend College men's basketball team hosted Blinn college on Wednesday, January 12th for a conference matchup. Needing to get back in the win column as CBC dropped the past five games.
After opening the game 13-6, Coastal Bend then fell behind to Blinn. The Bucs would go on a 23-7 run to lead the Cougars, 29-20 with 5:34 remaining in the first half. CBC trailed Blinn, 27-37 at halftime.
Following halftime, the coaching staff made some key adjustments along with the team knocking down shots to trim the deficit. Coastal Bend's Jaylen Williams, Robert Chapman and Robert Gil led the charge for the Cougars by hitting timely three pointers. Chapman deposited a critical three point shot to tie the contest up at 46-46, with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
The Buccaneers would regain the lead but the cougars didn't back down as both teams seesawed back and forth with the lead. No team held a lead larger than three points during crunch time but with 20 seconds left, the Cougars found themselves ahead, 65-64.
Following an empty possession by Blinn, Coastal Bend corralled the basketball to get sent to the charity stripe after being fouled. Chapman netted both free throws to put the Cougars up, 67-64. The Bucs had one last possession with 11 seconds remaining but tough defense and missed shot earned Coastal Bend a victory over Blinn.
CBC's Robert Chapman had a game-high, 23 points to go with his six rebounds and three assists for the contest. Guard, Lonzo Rand contributed 11 points in the win while dishing out three assists and recording one steal. Point Guard, Robert Gil tallied 11 points and notched a game high seven assists. Cougar Guard, Jaylen Williams deposited nine points along with three rebounds and two assists for the evening. Forward, Tyree Jones netted eight points for Coastal Bend.
The Cougars improve to 4-13 on the season and 2-6 in conference play. Up next for Coastal Bend will be The Angelina College Roadrunners on Saturday, January 15th in Lufkin, TX. Tip-Off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
