Beeville, TX- The Coastal Bend College men's basketball team hosted Angelina College on Saturday, February 5th for a conference matchup. The Cougars are looking to build from their 28-point win against Jacksonville College.
After starting the game with two quick threes by Kavon Moore, the Cougars fell behind to the Roadrunner's 14-8, 6 minutes into the first half. Angelina would go on a 24-9 run in the first half, leading the Cougars 28-15 with 8:21 remaining in the first half. CBC would fight back within single digits to end the half down to Angelina 34-41.
Following halftime, the coaching staff made some lineup adjustments, starting Robert Chapman in order to go small ball. The Cougars jumped out in full court man press, causing Angelina to start the half with a couple of turnovers. The Cougars started off hot from deep with 3 threes and a 15-9 run, allowing the Cougars to pull within 1 point early in the second half. With the defensive pressure from Coastal Bend, Antonio Halliburton poked the ball lose, Robert Chapman jumped on the ball and passed it to Clay Baldwin for the layup to tie the game at 52-52 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
Coastal Bend would jump out to a 7-point lead 60-53 before the Roadrunner's regained the lead by going on an 8-0 run with 5:30 remaining in the second half of play. With multiple lead changes in the final 5 minutes of play, the Cougars found themselves down 2 points with 6 seconds left in regulation, when Robert Gil went full-court and scored a layup to send the game into overtime.
Throughout overtime, each team was trading buckets. With the ball in the Cougars hands with a chance to take the lead in the final minute of regulation, Robert Gil drove towards the basketball, and passed the ball to Ka'von Moore for the score to tie the game at 74-74. After a hard-fought game, Coastal Bend ended the game with a defensive stop to seal the game with a 76-74 win over.
CBC's Robert Gil had game-high, 20 points to go with seven rebounds for the contest. Guard, Jaylen Williams deposited 15 points along with four assists, while Robert Chapman put up 14 points with nine rebounds and one steal. Guard, Antonio Halliburton finished the game with seven points and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Forward, Ka'von Moore netted 11 points in the contest for Coastal Bend.
The Cougars improve to 6-16 on the season and 4-9 in conference play. Up next for Coastal Bend will be at The Blinn College Buccaneers on Wednesday, February 9th in Brenham, TX, where the Cougars are looking to beat them for the second time this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
