Cougars Defend Homecourt Versus Pirates; Sweep Season Series

Beeville, TX-  The Coastal Bend College men's basketball team hosted Victoria College on Monday, February 21st for a conference matchup. Coastal Bend is looking to beat Victoria for the second time this season. With a win over the Pirates, Coastal Bend could climb in the regional tournament standings.

Starting the game, Coastal Bend would come out not ready to play. The Pirates would jump out to a 9-0 run with just over three minutes into the game. Robert Gil would get an and-one to put the Cougars on the board, giving them some momentum to go on an 11-0 run. The Cougars would lead the Pirates 11-9 with 13:00 remaining in the half.

For six minutes the game would go back and forth between lead changes, ultimately leading to a 10-0 run by the Cougars with 4:00 left in the first half. Coastal Bend leads Victoria 36-25, the biggest lead of the game. Coastal Bend would end the half up 43-35.

For the second half of play, the coaching staff were looking to continue to play with the fast pace on offensive while feeding the ball more to their big man, Faybeyon Shelton who has the advantage in size down low. For the first ten minutes of the second half, both teams would get off to a great start on offense. Coastal Bend would still lead the game by a score of 71-61 with approximately 10:00 left until the end of regulation.

However, the Pirates of Victoria College would go on a 16-6 run, to tie the game at 77-77 with 6:00 left on the game clock. With the game going down to the wire, Lonzo Rand hits a three-pointer with 28.5 seconds remaining in the game. With a chance to tie or win the game, Victoria turns the ball over. Coastal Bend College would go on to win the game, 88-84.

CBC's Robert Gil would score a game-high 26 points along with five assists and two steals. Guard, Lonzo Rand had 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Guard, Jaylen Williams put up 12 points, five rebounds, and six assists, while Robert Chapman had 10 points and six assists. Center, Faybeyon Shelton had 14 points, three rebounds, one steal and one block.
