Former CBC Softballer Wins NAIA National Championship with Our Lady of the Lake University
COLUMBUS, GA.  In a story of determination and triumph, former Coastal Bend College softball standout, Alana Benitez, was a contributor at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio for the NAIA National Championship team. The victory marks a significant milestone in her athletic career and highlights the strength and talent as her collegiate career began with the Coastal Bend College softball program.
 
The Saints earned a first round bye thanks to their impressive 47-1 regular season record and landing the number one overall seed for the NAIA Softball World Series. In their first game, OLLU beat Madonna University (MI) 3-0 in the second round matchup. The Saints would then handle Oregon Tech University (OR), 3-0 in third round. In the semi-finals, OLLU edged out Sciences & Arts University (OK), 4-3 in extra innings to advance to the championship game. 
 
The road to the 2024 NAIA World Series Championship was challenging, but Benitez and her teammates displayed resilience and skill. In the final game, OLLU faced Jessup University (CA), a formidable opponent known for their strong lineup and competitive spirit. The game was intense, with both teams giving their all. The Saints scored once in the third inning and tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth en route to their 2-0 championship victory.
 
Benitez' journey from a promising athlete at Coastal Bend College to a NAIA National Champion with OLLU is a testament to her hard work, perseverance, and the solid foundation provided by her previous coaches and teammates. She had been a team player during the Saint's championship run, displaying leadership, playing experience and continuous support for the team. The Saints went on to have one of the best records in the country, going 57-3 on the season and protecting their home field with a 28-1 home record as they brought home the program's first NAIA National Championship.
 
Early Days at Coastal Bend College
 
Benitez's time at Coastal Bend College was marked by exceptional performance and a deep commitment to the sport. As a key player, she helped lead the team to several successful seasons, earning accolades and recognition for her outstanding contributions. Her coaches at Coastal Bend College remember her as a dedicated athlete with a relentless drive to improve and succeed.
 
"Benitez was always one of the hardest workers on the team," said Roland Salazar, head coach of the Coastal Bend College softball team. "Her passion for the game and her teammates was evident in everything she did, both on and off the field. Seeing her succeed at the national level is no surprise to us."
 
During her lone campaign at Coastal Bend College, Benitez hit for an average of .360 at the dish, with two home runs, 15 doubles, one triple and 24 RBI's during her 43 games in Cougar blue. 
 
Transition to Our Lady of the Lake University
 
After completing her time at Coastal Bend College, Benitez transferred to OLLU, bringing her talent and experience to the Saints. The transition to a new team and a higher level of competition in the NAIA was seamless, thanks to the strong foundation built during her Junior College years.
 
At OLLU,  Benitez established herself as a vital member of the team as a Utility Player. Her performance and team support throughout the season was marked by crucial hits, defensive prowess, and a leadership role that inspired her teammates. Her contributions were pivotal throughout the season, where the Saints faced some of the toughest teams in the NAIA.
 
During her Spring 2024 season with the Saint, Benitez saw action in 26 games. She went on to average .267 at the plate, hitting for two home runs while knocking in nine RBI's. In the field, Benitez posted fielding percentage of 1.000.

With a national championship under her belt, Benitez looks forward to continuing her success in her field of study while earning her Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. Her journey serves as an inspiration to current and future student-athletes at Coastal Bend College, proving that dedication and hard work can lead to extraordinary achievements.
